Lyon vs Arsenal – UWCL Preview: TV Channel, Live Stream, Team News and Prediction

Matchday one of the 2022/23 Women’s Champions League group stage features one of the biggest matches the competition could have wished for, as defending champions Lyon take on English giants Arsenal.

These are two of the biggest clubs in women’s football, both with rich histories at home and in Europe. Both, however, have significant injuries before this one, although that does not tarnish the occasion and it will surely be the one to see this week.

Arsenal reached the quarter-finals of last season’s competition, where they were eliminated by Wolfsburg. Lyon, meanwhile, regained its crown by beating Barcelona in the final to win a sixth title in seven years.

Lyon has a sizable injury list ahead of it, including superstar forward Ada Hegerberg. But the depth of her squad is such that coach Sonia Bompastor can still name a world-class XI.

Catarina Macario, Sara Dabritz, Dzsenifer Marozsan, Ellie Carpenter, Griedge Mbock and Delphine Cascarino and Amel Majri are missing for the French giants.

Arsenal are without their preferred centre-back pairing, Leah Williamson and Rafaelle Souza, in what is a huge lack for a game of this importance. Lotte Wubben-Moy and Steph Catley were back at the weekend, but Jennifer Beattie has enormous European experience.

Lyons (4-3-3): Endler; Jaurena, Renard, Sombath, Bacha; Henry, Horan, Egurrola; Van de Donk, Le Sommer, Malard

Arsenal (4-3-3): Zinsberger; Wienroither, Wubben-Moy, Beattie, Catley; Walti, Little, Miedema; Mead, Blackstenius, McCabe.

Arsenal have had the toughest possible start, just as they were at this time last year when they had to go to Barcelona on matchday one.

On that occasion, they were thrashed 4-1 and here it could be a similar outcome. Lyon has more injuries, but has enormous depth to rotate more world-class players into the squad. Arsenal’s injuries are fewer in number but arguably more destructive.

That could indicate a fairly comfortable Lyon win.

Prediction: Lyon 3-1 Arsenal
